Pixies Japan

After hard work making sure we got all the Japanese writing correct, it's really awesome to have all seven Pixies Japan discs in hand. Obviously, the discs are significant because it was such an experience to tour Japan, but beyond that, I'm just really proud of the final product.

I think the best shows are Fukuoka (first night, lots of energy, awesome club... definitely a crowd that appreciated the Pixies coming to their town; got the impression that Fukuoka doesn't see as many Western acts as some other cities in Japan) and the first night in Tokyo, which was where everyone really hit their stride and all the nuance of performing in Japan started to become regular.

Anyway, in celebration of the discs arriving, we've changed our prices to the standard US dollar prices, so you'll want to grab one or two of these discs now (they are shipping immediately).

digging japan

Some great things that Japan offers (in my opinion):

1) The vending machines with perfect temperature controlled hot coffee in a can.
2) Really fast trains that take you to far away places in a shorter amount of time than most countries are able to.
3) Local crew's at the venue taking pride in their work and without a doubt, our Japanese traveling production crew setting everything up perfectly upon learning after the first show what needs to be done.
4) The fact that our Japanese production crew can do as good and even a better job than most crews I have dealt with on tour and keep in mind that includes a language barrier.
5) Beer in a vending machine at bars and clubs kicks serious ass, no waiting in a line or a tip needed...if you like can'd liquid.
6) Garbage cans bunched together for all sorts of trash, which can seem time consuming to some Americans (where we, in most of the states, throw everything away into one pile) but way more environmental and cost effective upon recycling and tax payers $/clean up.
7) Sushi.
8) Sake.

tokyo one

Today we are in Tokyo. The band are rocking their way through an amazing set tonight , and the crowd is going crazy. Starting tonights show was a blistering rendition of 'Gouge Away', and the 'Debaser' and 'U Mass' were as good as I have ever heard them. A great night indeed....

peace

Here we are in Japan. We are all really happy to be back here after our last visit in the Summer of 2004. Our first show in Fukuoka was excellent. A very enthusiastic, lively crowd made for a great start to the tour.

Today we have come to the City of Hiroshima by bullet train. What a wonderful public transport system. Hiroshima is a city made famous through the atrocities of warfare. The band and I visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum before the show. This museum collects and displays belongings left by the victims, photos, and other materials that convey the horror of the Worlds first atomic bombing on the City of Hiroshima. An extremely moving and poignant visit for all...

Tonight show at the Club Quattro is another packed out, sold out show. The band are currently performing 'Dead' as I write this. Enjoy the shows.

fukuoka & hiroshima

What's happened since I last wrote? The band is already 2/7th's of the way through this short tour of Japan. Fukuoka's concert at Drum Logos rocked! These shows are awesome because they are all at small clubs -- the kinds of places where the band thrives (and always plays the best shows; see: Raleigh, NC). The crowd was wild. Lots of singing, and the most polite moshing I've ever seen. I'll post a set list from Tokyo later today, hopefully.

After the show the local promoter took us out for an awesome dinner. As we arrived, people all around the town recognized David & Joe, who both came out to dinner. They signed autographs for a few fans and signed a panel of the wall for the restaurant.

In the morning, we met in the lobby and headed off to Fukuoka's main train station, where we boarded a bullet train for Hiroshima. We were on the train for about an hour and a half before we arrived, and seemed to be travelling very very fast. We went straight to the venue in Hiroshima which turned out to be on the 10th floor of a department store. The area was full of shops, arcades and some cafes.

I'm not even sure what day it is here -- OK, it's Monday morning at 4:20 am. I fell asleap before dinner last night, worn down from a late night in Fukuoka. A lot of us are meeting in the lobby of our hotel to go see the Hiroshima Peace Museum before we leave for a flight to Tokyo at 10. We'll be in Tokyo for a few days -- it will be nice to be in one place for a while. And all of the crew is already looking forward to what happens on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning -- the night before a day off.

More soon from Japan. In the mean time, check out some new photos in my gallery.

japan day 1: fukuoka

So we've arrived in Japan in Fukuoka, and the crew is about two hours away from meeting in the lobby and heading over to the venue. The band is scheduled to sound check today for the first time in a long long time... I'll try to take some pictures for the site. I arrived last night myself, and haven't seen anyone yet. There are a bunch of birthdays while we are here -- Robin, Kim and Dave's tech; Ben, the monitor engineer; Richard the tour manager and Dave Lovering himself are all celebrating birthdays on this trip, starting with Ben & Robin last night. Unfortunately, I spet most fo Ben & Robin's birthday flying, so I haven't seen them yet to wish them a happy birthday.

I'll be blogging all about the trip here, but I've also got some more personal observations on my own site, jakewalker.com, so have a look if you're at all interested.

Pictures to come, as soon as I can borrow a USB cable from someone who was smart enough to bring one.

what's your favorite?

Got a nice email from James in Chicago, listing his most favorite:

1) Chicago, IL Lollapalooza... even though I don't have this yet, I was there. Maybe 5 yards away from Kim Deal throughout the entire show, bleeding from getting hit w/ something during Billy Idol & sweating profusely. Not only was the band in tip top shape, but they looked like they were genuinely enjoying themselves. Pixies surrounded by 30,000 of their closest friends & the Chicago skyline…doesn't get much better.

2) Portland, OR shows... an awesome selection of songs. Band sounds awesome playing songs they haven't played in 12 years. "Allison" is a welcomed favorite that can definitely be danced to, as well as very awesome presentations of "The Sad Punk" & "Dancing the Manta Ray".

3) San Francisco, CA shows... there is a reason these shows sold out right away!!!

4) Indianapolis, IN... The alphabetical show. Very cool, & very long. I was at an alphabetical show in 1989 at Chicago's Metro, then called Cabaret Metro. That show was awesome to see, even though I was only 9 years old & afraid of the mass of people. Probably the most unique recording of the Pixies recent shows & awesome openers & closers.

Thanks, James!

Manchester show is a killer, I mixed it tonight. More thoughts soon.

richard's faves

We have now completed the European tour. I feel the most recent shows in England have been along side the very best the band have done. The crowd reactions were amazing, and the atmosphere was electric.

On a personnal note the Manchester Apollo show was very special... Manchester is my home town, and this venue is a very famous, special place to have a concert. The night the Pixies performed felt like one of those truely great nights. The excitment and anticipation of the crowd, both inside and outside the venue was incredible. For me it ranked up there with the infamous Stone Roses shows some years back! The two London shows at Alexander Palace which followed were also very memorable. 8,500 people each night, going crazy and having a fantastic time.

Enjoy the shows... and relive those very special nights.

bryan's favorites

Well, Jim, I'm glad you asked. I've been listening to Indianapolis almost nonstop. It's a good long set, played in alphabetical order, and it happens to have most of my favorite songs on it. I'm not sure if it's because I was at the show, or because it really was better than the rest, but I've heard other people say it was their favorite show, too. After that, probably Chicago (Lollapalooza), again maybe because I was there and it was a day I'll never forget, but also because the recording is great, the band was in a great mood, and all the hits are there. Next, I'll say the Portland shows, even though there's a bit of repetition between discs, the sets were heavy on b-sides, and it seems like the performance is amped up a notch for the start of the tour. Plus, as the designer, I think those two discs have the best color combos, ha. Raleigh, San Francisco and DC are all great. I listened to Pittsburgh a lot on vacation, that's a really good one, too. But if I had to choose one, it would definitely be Indianapolis.

09.07 / Bryan Bedell

new shows, jim's picks

We've added four new shows to those available. Charlottesville, Baltimore and Brooklyn and Kingston NY. And it looks like we'll be going with the band to Japan at the end of the year. More news on that soon.

We have received a number of emails asking which are our favorite shows/recordings. Well, we all disagree about this but here's mine, in no particular order. San Francisco (sold out), Raleigh, Chicago and the Toronto/Montreal combo. This will probably change when we hear the European mixes (soon) as we have received many raves about Edinburgh, Manchester and the Ally Pally shows in London. Conspicuous by its absence is Newport, the acoustic set. It goes without saying that you MUST have that one, and it's nearly sold out by the way. Bryan, Eric, Jake and Richard. What say you?

Keith and Sue Perkins of Derby are going to the Ally Pally Show tomorrow night on us! Yay!

We happen to have a pair of tix to the long-sold out European finale at the Alexandra Palace tomorrow night (September 1) and here's how we're going to give them away. Buy a Best 3 European Shows package which will include one of the two Palace dates and then write us at contest at theshowlive dot com telling us you did and that you can get to the show. We'll pick someone at random from that group and leave the tix at the box office for them. (If you have already have ordered a show that winds up in the "Best 3" you can change that order or have it refunded.) Ready, set, go.

Plus, everyone who enters will also receive a special disc of the band's prefromance at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this summer free.

An absolutely epic show. The Apollo Theater in Manchester was hot and punters came out soaking wet and totally exhausted from this massive set. If you've been waiting to get just one more disc, this is the one to get. The band aborted Hey in the middle of the set, which lead to a nice crowd sing along. But all was redeemed when the band came back out (for the first time in a long time) for a second encore and finished the night off with the song.

They always say the best thing you can do when you arrive in Europe is to stay up all day and try to get on a normal clock as quickly as possible. So i'm growing to regret that two hour nap yesterday afternoon right about now. But that's OK -- I'm sure the music here at Lansdowne Road will wake me up pretty quickly ... doors open in just a few hours, at 2:00, and we're already set up and ready to roll... there are four bands on the bill, including Kings of Leon ... and finishing off with a massive set for 20,000 + by The Pixies later this evening.

We weren't able to set up our usual kiosks here today, so fans who buy at the gig will have to register for their discs online. Or of course, you can get your copy right on our website.

I'll be posting updates throughout the rest of this European tour -- in between naps.

We gave Showlist subscribers a couple days head start on this contest. And now it's everybody else's turn.

Two winners will receive tickets to the Dunkin Donuts Newport Folk Festival on August 6th, the day The Pixies headline with an acoustic set, PLUS BACKSTAGE VIP PASSES! It's up to you to get there. The festival lineup is amazing and this promises to be one of the highlights of the year. Frank Black said, "I hope Pete Seeger doesn't go after the power supply with an axe, for us going acoustic."

Here's what you have to do: Call this phone number, 703 637 9276, and give us your name and email address and then sing a few bars from a Pixies song. Then we'll pick out a few of the best ones and let everyone vote for the winners. But get busy, contest entries close next week. If you can't get to Rhode Island, sing for us anyhow. We'll give away six copies of the disc set from that date too.

We've got a slew of entries in already. Check out this one, and this one too.

tomorrow's the last day

tomorrow will be the last day to order the "gouge away" pack and be guaranteed to get all the lowest, consecutive numbers of the edition (that is, those who gouge away will be getting the lowest numbers, and all their numbers will match). after tomorrow, we can't guarantee that to be the case any longer.

oh... and we expect to have the first 10 shows shipped out before friday.

07.18 / Jake Walker

certificate of authenticity

So this year's edition will have something special -- a certificate of authenticity with each product purchased. Rather than using the small transparent stickers we've used in the past to indicate what number/edition the CD is, we will be providing beautiful certificates of authenticity that can stay outside of, or fit inside the CD case itself. They will come in a gorgeous, custom printed envelope, and will be included with each purchase.

We are expecting a huge shipment of the CDs for the first 10 shows in the next few days, then the next 5 shows in the days to come. We'll keep you updated on shipping as we know more. But once they do ship, we think you'll be impressed with our new way of numbering these discs.

proofs

cleveland proof
If you've seen the Pixies' live discs from last December, you'll know the digipaks were printed on glossy UV-coated paper. (Or, if you're not a designer or printer, you know the "cases" were "shiny.") We liked that look just fine, but we wanted to try something different this time, so we opted for uncoated paper for a more organic feel. The disc printers told us "the colors will be muted, you're not going to like the way it looks!" Well, we got the proofs and they look great, just as we hoped. We should be shipping the first batch of discs next week, and we will post all the final, official artwork and setlists very soon.

the five best announced

If you've ordered the "Five Best" set, or wondered which five shows will be contained therein, here's the cut:
San Francisco
Two great sets in a legendary theater.
Denver
Red Rocks? Pixies? Come on.
Indianapolis
A fantastic alphabetical show.
Raleigh
The band's favorite show of the tour, in a packed warehouse in an office park.
Washington, DC
A gold record award, and a good outdoor venue.
We thought that was the best combination of songs, performances, and venues, and we're sure you'll agree.

06.28 / Bryan Bedell

production and a taste

Many of the shows are mixed already, the balance are being tweaked and mastered right now in Boston and they sound great. Here's a taste of things to come, Alec Eiffel from the late show in Portland on May 27th with a cool, ragged little intro thing. Production on the packaging is in the works and this is a comp of the covers. We're using a set of colors and lyric-inspired icons and then shuffling them around so each night's package is different.

Remember, if you order Portland or Los Angeles, you get both the early and late shows in a single package. San Francisco is now totally sold out and LA from 6/2 and Boston or the 'alphabetical' setlist show from Indy will likely go next, if you're keeping score at home. Much more news soon. Make sure you're on the Showlist to get it first.

06.22 / Jim Coudal

ham and shoe polish

We have some winners in the "Kim Deal hair challenge." Only two people, Shawn Kelley and Bryan Knights said "ham and shoe polish" which is how we remembered the story, so they each win a 2004 Pixies live show disc set.

It's interesting, however, to note that our memory was entirely wrong, which makes you wonder how two people got the right answer. I think Shawn Kelley has our office bugged, and Bryan Knights is maybe his henchman or something.

Eleanor Clarke Biddle was the first to send a scan of the July 1995 Spin cover story (two others came less than hour later! So close!), so she gets the t-shirt. The Spin story, while describing Kim's hair, did not reference either product. Go figure. The story also reminded me how much I wanted to be Jim Greer in 1995 (writing for Spin, dating Kim Deal, AND playing bass for Guided By Voices!)

Many people guessed one or the other, we'll give honorable mention (but no prizes, sorry) to Stuart MacMillan, who found the ham quote on the internet (though we still don't know where it originally appeared): "I had to use ham. I took a piece of ham from the deli platter and rubbed it in my hair. I had to-that fluffy thing was really bothering me." and Jeremy Withers, who was the first to post "shoe polish." Gina Brandol sent us the text of a 1994 Rolling Stone story which contains the passage: "Her shoulder-length hair is tangled and matted, an effect she achieves by not washing it very often and by regularly applying black shoe polish to cover up her gray."

Since we promised another disc-set to the funniest answer if we remembered it wrong, we'll send that to Stuart, since he was the first to say "ham" and guessed "Heineken" for the other.

Other close-guesses were "vaseline" and "mayo," but apparently neither has the fluff-reduction qualities of deli ham. Several people said "magic markers" or "Sharpies." While that might be true, it wasn't in the article, but then again, neither was the ham. Or the shoe polish, for that matter. Yes, it was admittedly a pretty arbitrary contest. Thanks to everyone who entered, winners will be contacted by email today.

it's over

Well, i'm just about spent. I woke up this morning half asleep, thinking I was in Atlanta, and stumbled out of bed and into a cab in time to realize i was in Boston and my flight wasn't for another few hours.

Last night's homecoming show was excellent. And now everyone's on a bit of a break until the Milwaukee Summerfest show on 7 July. I for one can't wait to get home; touring's been grueling. Last night was the first hotel I had seen since Friday night.

I'll get the Boston setlist posted soon enough. I know they closed with U Mass and encored with Gigantic. All the details later in the day.

wet and a bit behind

It poured down rain while the band was on in Atlanta, then the bus broke down and the crew had to scramble to Raleigh and then DC. We'll get caught up on set lists and the like soon enough.

it's raining

It's raining, but it's not quite pouring in Atlanta. The Pixies go on at 10:30, and I'm gonna do my best to blog the set live tonight. Tom Petty's playing not a few yards away at the same time, but we will get a chance to see The Killers and Keane ahead of time. Tonight's the first of five shows back to back for the crew.

Last night was Kim and Joey's birthday's both. Happy Birthday!!

contest update

We have a couple correct answers (if our memory serves) to the trivia question (see below). We'll keep the contest open for a couple more days in the hopes someone finds the Spin article or knows Bob Guccione Jr. and can call him and have him look it up. A trip to the library and a quarter for the photocopier could still win you a t-shirt!

murat.jpg

Susan and I drove down to Indianapolis last night to hand out flyers and see the show. Handing out flyers was a lot of fun, a lot of people would kind of try to avoid me, thinking I was trying to sell them something, but when they realized it was something they wanted, they came back, ha. While we had to explain the concept to a few people, a very surprising number of people were familiar with our site and our product and were looking forward to ordering (or already had). I got to meet a few folks from the pixiesmusic.com forums, Chad and someone else whose name I forgot (sorry), thanks for saying hi! Also, let me shout out to Matt (I hope it's Matt), who instead of complaining about me taking notes the whole show, held his cellphone with the light on so I could see what I was writing. Anyway, I was amazed at the variety and diversity of the crowd, including a guy from Chicago who came down to chaperone some pre-teen Pixies-fans and asked me if I was in the band. ("I do look quite a bit like Frank Black, and I have certainly been to many shows where the band sells their own merchandise, but no, sorry.")

As the mob at the door petered out, I checked out the t-shirts in person for the first time, then walked around the venue, it was a great place, very fancy and clean with sort of a ali-baba theme, and the theater had seats with great sightlines and sound. Smaller than the Chicago Theatre here, and similarly comfortable and friendly.

We took our seats and the band took the stage and ripped right into it:
ALISON
BONE MACHINE
BROKEN FACE
CACTUS
CARIBOU (wicked Joey solo)
DEAD (see a pattern yet? I didn't)
DEBASER
Then Kim let loose her first big smile and I've never seen a crowd go more nuts.
ED IS DEAD
GIGANTIC
GOUGE AWAY (it finally hit me here: Alphabetical!)
HERE COMES YOUR MAN
Kim got thrown off here, for some reason thinking they messed up the order, but Frank straightened her out. Then they gave a shout out to Fort Wayne, where they played one of their first shows. Then Frank sorta started to ramble and ramble and ramble then shouted:
HEY
I BLEED
IN HEAVEN
INTO THE WHITE
LA LA LOVE YOU
MONKEY GONE TO HEAVEN
MR. GRIEVES
NIMROD'S SON
At this point I noticed that Frank's acoustic guitar had holes worn right through the front. Hardcore, brother.
NO. 13 BABY
STORMY WEATHER
TAME
U-MASS
and from then on it was pretty easy to guess what was next:
VAMOS
(I know my Vamoses and this was a great Vamos, with the drumstick toss successful both ways.) Then I wrote down
WAVE OF MUTILATION and
WHERE IS MY MIND
before they even started playing them, so luckily they did. Going through my head, I couldn't think of any Xs, Ys, or Zs, so I assumed that was it. They came up to the front of the stage and waved and smiled, but then they geared up again and rocked Neil Young's:
WINTERLONG

Besides being the first alphabetical show since the reunion, and being a spectacular show in general, at 27 songs, it's the longest show of the 05 tour to date. They packed in all the favorites plus a few better-live-than-on-the-album songs like Stormy Weather, Into the White and Alison. So I'm just sayin', no pressure or anything, but this might be the show for you, if you've been holding out. Great show.

indy tonight

With Jake and Eric from The Show *and* Bryan and Susan from CP at tonight's performance, let's hope we have web access from the venue. Sets up to be a great night in Hoosierland. More (hopefully) later. If you're going, please come by and say hello.

kim’s hair minutiae

Here's a new trivia question: It's so tough, we don't even know the answer for sure, so take a wild guess and you might still win.

Kim Deal was on the cover of Spin magazine about ten years ago. The story isn't online, so we're working from memory, but a couple of us clearly remember her mentioning two unlikely products she used to give her hair its distinctive style.

The first two fans to email us (at contest AT theshowlive DOT com) both of Kim's mid-'90s hair styling secrets will win an '04 Pixies live 2-disc set.

The first person to send us a scan or digital photo of that passage from Spin (which might actually prove our memory wrong) wins our limited edition t-shirt.

If our memory IS proven wrong, we'll reward the first person that matches the story, and whoever made up the funniest answer.

red rocks

We're gearing up for tonight's Red Rocks concert after a long drive from Los Angeles yesterday. This is my first time here, and the venue is beautiful. During the day, we've seen people climbing the stairs of the venue, running up and down the steps, etc. Tonight the Pixies are joined not only by the Bellrays but also by The Violent Femmes, which should be a fun show. I'll post more details when I have a chance to get online during or after the show.

news and more news, all of it good

One advantage of being a small company is that we can change things quickly to make improvements. Like this for example. Starting right now, if you already ordered a single show in Portland, San Francisco or Los Angeles, YOU WILL RECEIVE A DISC-SET CONTAINING BOTH SHOWS FROM THAT NIGHT. The set lists have been quite a bit different from show to show and many fans have written us wanting the full nights' performances. So we're doing that.

If you already purchased both shows from a single night, we'll be contacting you in the next few days to refund one of your payments or apply it to a different night. Your choice.

Because of all this, the Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles shows will more than likely sell-out quickly. Our best guess is that San Francisco will go first. Consider yourself warned. Love, your friends at The Show and The Pixies.

tour so far...

We have now arrived in Los Angeles, having played a total of 8 shows in 6 days. Its a well earned rest day today! The band have really enjoyed the shows so far, and enjoyed getting back into the groove of touring. It has been great playing some of the old songs again that were not performed on last year's world tour. You will really enjoy hearing them.

fifty mile drive

By the time last night's second set ended and we got all packed up, it was already 3 am. We got a few hours sleep in our SF Hotel, then headed onto the bus for the quick trip to San Jose. It's a strange feeling, sleeping on a tour bus, because you basically sleep in what is a tiny little coffin. You've crawl into a small space less than 7 feet long and no more than a few feet high and close the curtains, with no view of where you are or where you are going. You get a vague sense of whether or not you're on the highway or on a smaller road by the way the bus turns and by the speed in which it feels like you are moving. This morning, however, I didn't have any idea where we are or what we were doing ... I was out cold. When I woke up, we were sitting in San Jose.

The logistics of touring are very impressive once you see them up close. It may seem simple, but being able to walk into any venue at any time and know that everything is in place where it should be is kind of amazing, especially when you consider that it all gets packed an unpacked in a matter of a couple of hours.

Being in San Fran for a few days was also great -- we had a chance to have a nice few nights in a hotel and get everything in order. The tour's going to get really hectic after Los Angeles, including two 1,000+ mile rides. After tonight we'll hit the bus overnight and wake up in LA, where we'll have the entire day off tomorrow. For most of the crew, LA is either home or it feels like it. Everyone's looking forward to the three day visit.

Incredibly, beautifully, sublimely different."

show two coming up

Whew. The first show was great - - nice to see the band back on stage again. And quite a few "new" songs (recorded live for the first time since the band got back together). What a strange feeling to see everyone exiting the venue into a still-bright Portland. Now the sun's gone down, and everyone's getting ready for the next set. The Bellrays go on in less than an hour, and the Pixies are expected shortly before Midnight. I'll be blogging the setlist live, again.

whew

You would think you get special attention when you travel with 300 pounds of audio recording gear. It's been a nervous few hours since last night when we arrived in Portland, OR without our luggage. But we've just got word that it's flown in, via San Francisco and Seattle, and is now sitting at the airport waiting for us to pick up, just in time to start recording the first show.

Weather is beautiful in Portland. And a big plug for an excellent breakfast this morning at The Pearl Bakery.

to a tee

If you see a nice-looking person in a tee like this in Portland during the next couple days, he or she will be glad to give you the skinny on how to order Pixies discs at the Roseland Theater. The fun starts tomorrow. Last chance to get the free disc of the band's performance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is tonight at midnight. Just make an online purchase before then and we'll include it with your order.

packing

What's it like the day before you start a 21-day, 6,000 mile journey touring with The Pixies? Well, I started the day by moving in to a new apartment (which I'll now vacate for 3 weeks) in Chicago. Then I came in to our studio and began final preparations for the tour, all the while making sure everything was in place to finish out our Dead Can Dance project.

As I'll fly to Portland tomorrow night, I've basically got 24 hours to prepare for this three week trip. Traveling with a band is not like traveling for fun or business. You've got to pack light and smart. I'll probably do laundry once or twice during the three week run, so I basically pack a week's worth of clothes. I feel like all the gadgets I take along with me (my PowerBook, my cell phone, my iPod, etc.) take up a whole bag themselves. Because all the luggage sits underneath the bus, you basically have to have a bag you can take into hotels, and a night bag you can load up at a venue and fit in your bunk. And since you're sharing your moving living quarters with nine other people, the less you have to bring, the better.

As far as our equipment for The Show goes, I'll be handling most of the sales and marketing stuff, while Eric Welsh will be handling the audio and recording end of things. We both pack our equipment into excellent travel cases, called Storm Cases. Highly recommended if you travel with sensitive electronics, camers, etc., and guaranteed to get you a TSA inspection.

So tonight it's off to Target to make sure I've got everything I need to get through the three week trip. And tomorrow, I'll fly in to Portland. I'll be blogging (RSS Feed) throughout the tour, giving you an idea of what it's like to be tagging along on the road with the Pixies.

05.24 / Jake Walker

t-minus two days and counting

We're getting everything set for the tour, packing all the equipment in James Bond type cases, testing stuff and waiting for bits and pieces to arrive from various printers and other sources. We're sitting on some BIG news and hope to be able to announce it very soon. Thanks to all the folks who ordered already and if you're holding a tix for the Roseland in Portland, make sure to stop by and say hello to Jake and Eric.

05.24 / Jim Coudal

pixiesdiscs.com street team

In each of the cities we're recording the Pixies, we'll need 1-2 energetic people to help us by handing out flyers and postcards before the concert, and to help explain our product. We can reward you with a t-shirt, a free CD of the show, and (best of all) a pass to see the concert itself.

If you or anyone you know is interested, write to jake (at) theshowlive (dot) com with PD STREET TEAM in the subject line. Let us know your name, age, city or concert or concerts you're interested in helping with. If we have an opening, we'll get back in touch.

trivial pursuit

On Monday, we sent out an email to our Showlist subscribers to let them know about the new Pixies live discs before anyone else. I came up with a trivia question for a giveaway. I thought I had a good, really difficult one, but hundreds of readers knew the answer. If you want to be alerted (early, even) to special offers and contests, and notification about our projects, sign up for the Showlist.

I guess we're going to need a tougher Pixies trivia question for next time. Send us a good question (and answer, with documentation, if possible). Preferably nothing that can be looked up on the web, but nothing so obscure that only someone that went to summer camp with Dave Lovering would know. Send your question to contest at theshowlive dot com.

We'll choose the best one and post it. The first person to reply with the correct answer (AND the person who wrote the question) will each win an '04 Pixies live 2-disc set, and an '05 Dead Can Dance European Tour live 2-disc set.

thoughts about design

We're working on the packaging for this new tour's disc sets. Last year's worked out great and we got lots of nice comments about them. We (meaning CP, a partner in The Show) have been asked by the band to design the merchandise for this tour so we have the opportunity to make everything from the tee-shirts to the disc packages work together. We'll be showing some of our work in progress here soon.

If you never saw last year's packages you gotta check this photo from Norfolk. Joey took a shot every night during his Vamos guitar solo and we used them for the center spread of each night's package. Maybe we'll do that again...

05.10 / Jim Coudal

encore

We're back! We were really happy with the way that things turned out when we recorded and distributed the last 12 shows of 2004, and you seemed to be too:

"The show was incredible, I snagged a set list and couldn't wait to get my discs from you guys. And you did not disappoint. The mix is nothing short of perfect."

"After a second listen I was thinking to myself, fuck it, these are better than the originals, possibly the best thing I've ever heard"

And that was what we did on just a few days notice. Since then, we've formed a company called The Show and recorded Dead Can Dance throughout Europe. And now we're moving on to the Pixies 2005 US Tour, and we can't wait to get started.

Like before, all of our CD's will be multi-track recorded and mixed after the fact, so the quality is better than anything you've ever heard. We'll be with the band for the entire tour, updating this blog every day with setlists, pix and news from the road. We'll produce and ship the limited-edition disc-sets just a few weeks after each show is over. We know you'll agree that this is the way to listen to The Pixies.

We've tried to do some creative things like including a free copy of The Pixies: Live in Cleveland, (from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame) for anyone who preorders a copy of any show from the tour online. Plus, we've designed and produced an exclusive tee that is only available to fans ordering their CD's here. If you've got any comments, suggestions, or questions, please get in touch with us. And we'll see you on the road.
